چکیده

We develop a theory of polymers in a nematic solvent by exploiting an analogy with two-dimensional quantum bosons at zero temperature. We argue that the theory should also describe polymers in an isotropic solvent. The dense phase is analyzed in a Bogoliubovlike approximation, which assumes a broken symmetry in the phase of the boson order parameter. We find a stiffening of the longitudinal fluctuations of the nematic field, calculate the density-density correlation function, and extend the analysis to the case of ferroand electrorheological fluids. The boson formalism is used to derive a simple hydrodynamic theory which is indistinguishable from the corresponding theory of polymer nematics in an isotropic solvent at long wavelengths. We also use hydrodynamics to discuss the physical meaning of the boson order parameter. A renormalization group treatment in the dilute limit shows that logarithmic corrections to polymer wandering, predicted by de Gennes, are unaffected by interpolymer interactions. A continuously variable Flory exponent appears for polymers embedded in a two-dimensional nematic solvent. We include free polymer ends and hairpin configurations in the theory and show that hairpins are described by an Ising-like symmetry-breaking term in the boson field theory.

Majorizing Multiplicative Cascades for Directed Polymers in Random Media

In this note we give upper bounds for the free energy of discrete directed polymers in random media. The bounds are given by the so-called generalized multiplicative cascades from the statistical theory of turbulence. For the polymer model, we derive that the quenched free energy is different from the annealed one in dimension 1, for any finite temperature and general environment. This implies ...

Renormalized field theory of collapsing directed randomly branched polymers.

We present a dynamical field theory for directed randomly branched polymers and in particular their collapse transition. We develop a phenomenological model in the form of a stochastic response functional that allows us to address several interesting problems such as the scaling behavior of the swollen phase and the collapse transition. For the swollen phase, we find that by choosing model para...

Alkaline Stability of Novel Aminated Polyphenylene-Based Polymers in Bipolar Membranes

This research investigated stability of two novel aminated polyphenylene polymers as anion exchange layers in bipolar membranes. Bipolar membrane stability was tested under operating conditions of 50 mA/cm2, and under conditions of soaking in room temperature 1 M NaOH. The stability of the custom made bipolar membranes was compared with those for two commercial membranes. For the polyphenylene-...

Random networks of cross-linked directed polymers.

We explore the effect of random permanent cross-links on a system of directed polymers confined between two planes with their end points free to slide on them. We treat the cross-links as quenched disorder and we use a semimicroscopic replica field theory to study the structure and elasticity of this system. Upon increasing the cross-link density, we get a continuous gelation transition signale...

IRWIN AND JOAN JACOBS CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES On the Statistical Physics of Directed Polymers in a Random Medium and Their Relation to Tree-Structed Lossy Compression

Using well–known results from statistical physics, concerning the almost–sure behavior of the free energy of directed polymers in a random medium, we prove that a certain ensemble of tree–structured rate–distortion codes with delayless decoding, asymptotically achieves the rate–distortion function under a certain symmetry condition.
